Wilmington
Chapter
National Railway Historical Society
The Wilmington
Chapter publishes the "Transfer Table" (our Chapter's newsletter) 6 to 10 times a year.
The "Transfer Table"
comes in two versions:
The Lite Version
is our electronic
version which is available for free from this web site. It has
limited content but gives you a taste of what is offered in our Full
Version.
The Full Version
is our printed newsletter which is mailed to you. It contains
everything in the Lite Version along with many other reprinted
pages from other NRHS newsletters, railroad publications, and flyers
that contain photographs, drawings, and maps. The full version is
just another benefit of joining our chapter.
The newsletters that
are available online will give you an idea of what the Wilmington
Chapter is all about. If you join, you will be able to receive a
printed copy of of the Full Version which will be delivered to your
mailbox.
Below the Newsletters
is a listing of Stories written by our
members.

special trip for the Wilmington Chapter's hosting of the NRHS
Director's meeting as photographed by Steve Barry on Oct. 28, 2011. Amtrak's 40th Anniversary display train
visited the Wilmington, Del. Chapter's home city on March 31-April
1, 2012 and at least half a dozen members turned out - photo

USS Missouri during the Japaneese surrender in 1945. Saved from
scrap, it is headed for the Fort Miles Historical Association at
Cape Henlopen State Park near Lewes, Del. On April 14, 2012, it was
awaiting final shipment at Georgetown, Del. by the Delaware Coast
Railroad on KRL 70904 - photo below by Mike Burkhart . The Editor of The Transfer Table was unable to
attend the April meeting due to a business trip. During that trip
however, he did not totally neglect his responsibilities and he was
indeed thinking about the newsletter. In fact he managed to locate
and photograph a transfer table in Gilion, Switzerland - look
closely and you will see it is a cog driven transfer table on the
narrow gauge cog railway between Montreux and Rochers-de-Naye -

- All of the Lite Version plus: Photos by Richard Hall: Photo
#1. The first photo did not have the date marked on it,
unfortunately that is not an unusual situation. Looking toward the
end of the car, the windows in the end indicate this was car number
78 which is seen in other photos, so this was probably taken on the
1971 Wilmington Chapter NRHS Chartered Street Car Christmas Party
Trip out of the 69th Street Terminal. In 1971 we had used a newer
car, in 1972 we chartered an older car which had undergone a major
restoration to its original appearance, a car which we also
chartered on other occasions. Henry "The Trolley Man" Dickinson with
his contacts in the Philadelphia traction system, arranged the
charters and decorated the car during the morning before the
Christmas party trip. Seen in the far end of the car, it looks like
Jane Allen looking out the window to the left and with her is M.D.
"Andy" Andrews looking to the right and talking to someone on the
other side of the aisle. I can't identify the other people now, I
thought I knew the one in the left foreground but now I don't think
it is who I thought it was, but if it isn't, then I don't know who
it might have been. Photo #2
Another view of the Christmas decorations Henry Dickenson had placed
in number 78 for the 1971 Wilmington NRHS Chapter Christmas
chartered street car trip from 69th Street to Media and Sharon Hill.
Sorry I can't identify the various people at this late date, with a
couple of exceptions, facing the camera on the right looks like Alto
Smith, Chapter member Tom Smith's father, my first thought was that
is William V. "Bill" Russell in the foreground, but on second
thought, I don't think it is. I do recognize the second face from
the left, its my wife Mary and to me she still looks the same today,
even back then she had grey hair which must have been due to some
heredity trait, she started getting grey very soon after we were
married. The wives provided refreshments on the NRHS Chapter
Christmas Party Charters and Paul Fortin still mentions the
chocolate chip cookies Mary made for the trips.
Photo #3. The Chapter Charter car had
to lay over for a time at the end of the line as shown here at
Sharon Hill. Several of the Chapter members or their families got
off to wait and watch the arrival and departure of a scheduled car
which followed a few minutes behind our car. The face of the person
on the left seems to be remembered but I have no idea what name went
with it, the second person may have been Paul Mosier, fourth from
left is the person I thought looked like William V. (I will no doubt
hear from him if it was or wasn't), Henry Dickinson is standing
between the pole and the car, facing the camera, and in the far
distance it may be Alto Smith between the station building and our
chartered car.
Photo #4. A view of car 78 during the
lay over at Sharon Hill in the snow which was so appropriate for the
Chapter Christmas Party Charter, just enough snow to give a seasonal
atmosphere, but not enough to be a problem for us driving up to the
69th Street Terminal. Note the phone box on the pole seems to be
open in this photo which would indicate our motorman had been
checking on how soon we were to depart, or how long we had to wait.
I don't know about the two who are standing on the platform by the
car door, they don't look like they belong to any of our members so
they were in all probability a couple of stray creatures native to
the area which had wondered in to wait for the next scheduled car
going toward 69th Street and were very likely curious about the
bunch of what they no doubt would have considered to be rather odd
characters and their decorated chartered street car.

November 2009-March 2010 Courtesy of Royersford Modular Model
Railroaders; Preamble Express Critique by Richard E. Hall from the
Transfer Table on September 1974
Photograph by Chapter Member Duane R.
Conly taken on Friday, July 27, 2007, as we awaited the launch of
our Chapter's CHARTERED CRUISE on the CHRISTINA RIVER and shows
Richard E. Hall, Greg M. Ajamian, and Allan C. Patterson in that
order. Richard was delighted to be able to participate in any
Chapter Trips, but in later years he felt that he would not be able
to make some of the "fast connections" on the SEPTA Trips. So this
trip was a special treat in that he could come along and he got a
"river's eye view" of three railroad bridges. He even provided some
new facts to our veteran river guide along the way! |
